Five years ago, Gwent-based dealership chain Get Connected had almost 20 stores, and managing director Damian Cole took the bold decision to expand into Cambridgeshire, then still considered to be virgin territory by enterprising and ambitious phone dealers.
Its core retail estate centred around Wales and the West Country, as it does today, but Cole reckoned that an area manager could take care of this new promised land by the Fens, and see Get Connected conquer the East as it already had Wales and the West of England.
But then things went wrong. Cole discovered store staff dealing drugs over the counter of the new Sleaford branch and the council leases on a couple more sites fell through. Cole decided the commute from Wales precluded any proper management of the venture, and he pulled out of Cambridgeshire.
