Since Virgin Mobile launched in November 1999, all the major networks have followed its lead on handset customisation. Now, no major network supports all available handsets across the breadth of its entire tariff range.
This pick-and-choose approach by the networks, which appears to be gathering pace as time goes on, is most pronounced on T-Mobiles contract range. Only a limited number of handsets are available to sales channels on T-Mobile.
Its strategy appears to have allowed the company to strike early supply deals with some handset vendors, meaning that some premium handsets are only available on T-Mobile contract for those crucial early weeks when the device can be sold at maximum retail price áa
