Under the initiative customers can place any unwanted handset, charger or accessories in the bins provided in Vodafone stores without charge. Alternatively customers can place old handsets and equipment into a freepost envelope that is supplies when they upgrade their handset.
The network has also pledged its support to the Global Cool campaign, which is encouraging people to reduce their annual carbon footprint by at least one tonne of CO2. A percentage of the funds raised thought the initiative will be donated to the Global Cool campaign and also to promote the use of solar devices in Zambia.
Vodafone UK chief marketing officer Tim Yates said: “Currently 90 million handsets are being sent to landfill every year – a crying shame when you think that 65-85% can be either recycled or reused.
“We believe it’s important to make sure our customers know what they can do to prevent this continuing which is why we want to put some extra energy behind the campaign and give it a real boost. We are extremely excited by our partnership with Global Cool and want our customers to share our enthusiasm.”
