PCSOs in Lewisham’s Downham Safer Neighbourhood Team have been trialling the scheme for almost a year and due to its success the trial has now been extended to the rest of Lewisham.
The PDAs will enable officers to take pictures of graffiti and fly-tipping and send them to a special council website where the incident will be allocated a reference number.
Pictures are sent to the website using SIM cards, which have been donated by O2 and Fleet Mobile Communications, via O2’s GPRS data network. The software on the PDAs is so sophisticated that it’s able to locate the exact location of any image without an officer having to enter an address.
Local residents are able to access the website and check progress on all crimes that are reported via the scheme. The site can be viewed at http://www.lovelewisham.org
O2 General Manager Sales Ben Dowd said: “We love the Lewisham initiative. It’s a perfect example of technology helping people to improve their community.
“O2 counts many police forces amongst its customers ands this is another demonstration of our commitment to helping the boys in blue by providing them with an easy and efficient way of doing their job.”
