Analysts predict a boom-time for mobile Wi-Fi over next three years.

The number of public Wi-Fi hotspots will exceed 430,000 by 2010, with an annual growth rate of 41 per cent, reckons ABI Research.

Merrill Lynch predicts the penetration of Wi-Fi devices will top one billion by 2010, with most dual-mode handsets such as Skype Wi-Fi phones and wireless media players. Infonetics Research, meanwhile, said in January shipments of mobiles will increase 26 per cent through 2010, while Wi-Fi handset sales will jump 1,300 per cent.

Meanwhile, mobile content usage is predicted to increase dramatically too. Informa Telecms and Media said in January that, by Christmas, 25 per cent of mobile subscriptions will incorporate data. By 2011, the global mobile content market will be worth $150 billion.
