But a Tesco spokesman said: “There is no stock clogging up the channels. All our distributors are very happy with the volumes they are holding. Sales are in line with budgets and Christmas is going great.”
He added: “Mobile phones will be one of the top-selling presents again this Christmas. Volumes of stock increase at this time of year and anyone that doesn’t understand that there may be some stock build up around now shouldn’t be in the industry.”
Several well-placed industry sources claimed last week Data Select and 20:20 were looking to offload “thousands” of Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung handsets originally destined for Tesco.
Data Select refused to comment. 20:20 was unavailable for comment.
