The decision comes just a month after deciding in January 2008 that it would not be renewing its title sponsorship which it had held for thirteen years, but with Epsom’s attempts for a replacement failing Vodafone stepped in.
Vodafone group corporate affairs director Simon Lewis said: “We are stepping in this year to support the derby during this transition phase.”
Head of group sponsorship Maria Bellanca added: "They approached us after they failed to find a title sponsor for the event. This will help them to complete the ongoing work and development of Epsom and the new grandstand being built.”
Nick Blofeld, managing director of Epsom Downs Racecourse shared his gratitude at the news:“I would like to thank Vodafone for their support.”
It is the second major sponsorship dropped by Vodafone after announcing its decision not to renew its interest in the UEFA Champions League which will run until the end of the 2009 tournament.
