Tow, who left Unique last month while it was in the throes of a VAT investigation by HM Revenue and Customs, joined Data Select soon after as managing director of the new division.
The managed services division will strengthen the distributor’s existing handset configuration and provisioning service, allowing it to attract customers outside the mobile market and build revenue. Tow will spend the next six months structuring the division and developing its processes. He will also recruit customer service and technical support staff.
Tow told Mobile News: “The managed services division will offer a portfolio of products and services, including device management and configuration.
“It will centre on the provisioning of handsets; we’ll always open a box and ‘do something’ to the handset. It could be as simple as a personalised screensaver with a corporate logo, or as complicated as anti-malware or spyware software. We are also in talks to add location-based services to the portfolio.”
Data Select will also provide the ACCODE network security solution, made by the Monitise Group, which provides staff with a PIN and generates a unique password each time they log in to their computer. There will also be a handset replacement service, where a new handset will be configured with the same applications as the old one.
Tow explained he had identified a “top 60” list of target customers, only six of whom already had an account with Data Select. Of those six, he said, only one had been a recently active buyer.
He said: “There is definitely revenue to be made from this emerging market.”
