PhonepayPlus, the industry regulator for premium calls and texts, has introduced new penalties for content providers that make it difficult for users to cancel service subscriptions.
Since 2006, all premium rate services have been required to allow customers to cancel any subscription by sending ‘Stop’ to a service’s short code number. PhonepayPlus said a minority of providers are not abiding by the rules. Content providers will now be barred if they fail to stop services on request.
PhonepayPlus chief executive Geroge Kidd said: "Customers must have absolute transparency. Some people who have contacted us did not even realise they had signed up for something. Some feel tricked. And some have opted in, but can’t find a way out. These are some of the issues we have looked to resolve."
