Phones 4U went toe-to-toe with high street rival Carphone Warehouse last week in price war around Nokia’s 5800 ‘Tube’ handset.
Phones 4U made the Nokia ‘Tube’ available for ‘free’ on 18-month T-Mobile Combi 15 tariffs last week, with 100 free minutes and 100 text messages.
Phones 4U’s latest monthly staff briefing said it will take on Carphone for value with its Nokia ‘Tube’ deal. Carphone is offering the Nokia ‘Tube’ for ‘free’ on the £15 per month O2 100 tariff, which runs for 24 months and allows 100 minutes and unlimited text messages.
Phones 4U staff were reminded of the economic climate and consumers’ pursuit of value-for-money deals and good-looking handsets. They were reminded to use discretionary discounts to achieve sales. Staff reckoned they would see good sales of the Nokia ‘Tube’ in the next weeks as a result.
One staffer said: “Every other customer coming in is asking for the ‘Tube’ so I think sales will be really good for this phone. Customers are looking for the best value deals on the market, and they don’t want to be locked into a very long term contracts. The fact we can discount handsets and are giving the Tube away free on an 18 month deal means we have an edge on our rival retail outlets.”
