MWC: Voda gets second Google phone

HTC said at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the second Google Android phone will be available from Vodafone exclusively in the spring.

The HTC Magic will be exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, Spain, Germany and France and available on a non-exclusive basis in Italy. It follows the G1, which was available from T-Mobile only in the UK.

The device comes with a 3.2-inch QVGA touchscreen display and features a trackball and navigation buttons for quick access to phone features. It also includes email options such as Google Mail, POP3 and IMAP, as well as Google Talk for instant messaging.

The Magic also features the Android-optimised Webkit browser, which also features Google Maps and Search, as well as YouTube.

HTC president and CEO Peter Chou said: “The HTC Magic embodies the compact style and sophistication for which HTC has come to be known, with the powerful and intuitive experience for which the Android platform was designed.”

Vodafone Group global director of terminals Patrick Chomet said: “Following our joining of the Open Handset Alliance, we have worked very closely with HTC to being this cool new phone to the market. Our customers want to access a wide range of the most attractive mobile devices to help them make the most of their time – the HTC Magic helps that need.”

The device will be available in white in the UK, with interested customers able to receive full details of the Magic’s availability, pricing and pre-ordering by registering their interest via the Vodafone website.
