MWC: RIM scores GSMA award


Research In Motion picked up the Chairman’s and Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough awards at the GSMA Global Mobile Awards 2009 at Mobile World Congress.

The Chairman’s award, given for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of mobile communications, was presented for RIM’s pioneering of the wireless data industry.

“RIM’s commitment to innovation has revolutionized the wireless industry and laid the foundations which shaped the thriving smartphone market of today,” said GSMA chairman Alexander Izosimov. “BlackBerry products and services have changed the way we communicate and interact, making businesses more productive and consumers better connected.”

RIM also received the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough award for the BlackBerry Storm’s SurePress screen.

Other winners included Nokia, for outstanding environmental contribution, Vodafone, for best mobile enterprise product or service, the BBC iPlayer for best mobile music or video service and INQ for best mobile handset or device.

The Nokia E71 and T-Mobile G1 were also highly commended in the handset category.
