Phones 4U has added Solo and Visa Electron cards to its list of approved forms of customer identification for credit checks on O2 and Vodafone new connections from February 1.
Phones 4U is the first retailer to reassign the cards previously considered invalid for credit checks because children under 18 could apply for the cards whereas customers must be 18 to sign up for a contract.
Phones 4U removed the cards from its compliance list around 2003.
All 360 of the retailer’s ‘low risk’ stores, which are stores with a low level of direct debit claw backs, will now be able to perform credit checks with the additional cards for contracts priced £35 and under.
Staff were told if it is successful in ‘low risk’ stores, it will be rolled out to all 450 stores in its estate.
