Carphone Warehouse UK chief executive Andrew Harrison (pictured) said last week around 1,000 new roles will be created through the new Carphone Warehouse/Best Buy joint venture in the UK.
Carphone said it is to cut 450 office-based roles in the UK and streamline its 340-strong product portfolio to cope with the economic climate going forward. Around 30 store closures are in line with normal business, it said. Carphone also said it will delay launch of the first ‘big box’ Best Buy outlet until 2010 in order to negotiate better prices on site leases. Carphone plans 200 Best Buy sites by 2013.
Harrison said: “Rather than wait for things to get worse, we are looking at what we can do to make ourselves leaner.”
