Chinese handset manufacturer ZTE has launched a touchscreen prepay handset branded by T-Mobile as part of its strategy to increase penetration in the UK and European markets and eventually rival the top five manufacturers.
The T-Mobile ‘Vairy Touch’ has a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, FM radio and MP3 player. It will retail at £59.99.
ZTE UK managing director Kevin Y Qi said: “Gartner analysts have recently predicted that ZTE could break into the global top five of handset manufacturers by the end of the year. Our partnerships with tier one operators such as T-Mobile is a testimony to our commitment to deliver attractive, exciting and affordable devices to consumers worldwide.”
A ZTE spokesman added: “ZTE is growing strongly in developed markets, with a key focus on the UK and Europe. Traditionally, the handset market has been dominated by a few key players, such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson, but that is no longer the case.
“With opportunities in developed markets stagnating, handset giants are now fighting with Asian handset manufacturers for the highly competitive and lucrative low-cost handset market in booming regions such as Latin America and Asia, and this could be the case for Europe soon.”
