New smartphone market entrant Acer has said that one of its forthcoming smartphones will be based on Google’s Android platform.

Senior corporate vice president and president of smart handheld business group for the world’s third-largest PC-maker, Aymar de Lencquesaing, said that it was planning to launch 10 handsets this year and was in talks with around 40 mobile networks to offer the devices.

The Android phone will be the only one not based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform. Acer announced at Mobile World Congress in February this year that it would enter into the smartphone market after becoming a successful name in netbooks.
