Brightstar plays to the IT crowd

Handset and IT distributor Brightstar Europe last week began a UK tour with BlackBerry to educate its IT resellers of the advantages of selling mobile, and to join a new BlackBerry exclusive club.

Brightstar and its IT distributor joint venture partner Computer 2000 have more than 11,000 dealers reselling mobile and IT services and hardware, and is looking to help its IT base add mobile to their business, as the two industries get closer.

Mobile News was invited, along with 38 IT resellers, to its second of 10 meetings, in Solihull near Birmingham, to listen to its plans to help educate its IT base of the opportunities to make BlackBerry a part of their core product base.

Brightstar Europe business development director Max Caballero (pictured) said: “Convergence is very important to us as we are a converged distributor, so we need to make sure we can be a mobile distributor and an IT distributor. That’s what Brightstar Europe is all about.

“It has the DNA of a mobile distributor thanks to Brightstar and the infrastructure and maturity of IT thanks to Tech Data and Computer 2000, so if convergence is that sweet point between IT and mobile, we are the converged distributor by default. The more the market moves to that place the more business we do.”

The meeting showed just how far apart the two industries currently are despite the mobile side of the industry discussing IT and its importance for more than a year now. None of the IT resellers in the room admitted to knowing who Brightstar actually was, having dealt previously only with Computer 2000.
