O2 has announced the release of the Sony Ericsson Naite “green” handset.
The handset, brought to market exclusively by O2, is the first of Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart range. The manufacturer said the handset’s overall carbon footprint is 15 per cent lower than the W890 handset released last year.
The Naite is made from recycled and recyclable plastics and comes with a low power consumption charger, reduced packaging and an e-manual.
The handset also features a two-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, FM radio and expandable memory up to 8GB.
O2 is also offering a free gift. Customers who buy the Sony Ericsson Naite can choose from items such as a solar powered charger, family ‘eco’ days out and organic food hampers. Or customers put the value of their gift towards charity donations to Africa, such as paying the salary of a teacher for a month, helping care for a child or contribute towards a water pump.
The Sony Ericsson Naite is free on selected contract tariffs and £97.86 on prepay.
O2 marketing director Sally Cowdry said: “Not only is sustainability a key issue for us as a business, but we know that it’s also important to our customers. The Naite is a key part of our strategy to bringing products and services to our customers which can help them reduce their energy consumption. It’s about making their decision to buy a greener device easy with an affordable and feature-packed phone, but which also has a greatly reduced carbon footprint.”
