London-based luxury handset manufacturer Onyx claims it is in “final discussions” with a large UK distributor.
It would not give further details, however, it said it is looking to bring a range of designer brand partnerships to the high tier handset market.
The company has recently signed a deal with Italian football body the FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio) to use its logo and that of the Italian national football team across a range of Android and Windows Mobile handsets to be marketed in Italy ahead of next year’s World Cup. The handsets will be available in the UK but only by special order.
Onyx chairman Zafar Mirza said the company was in further discussions with football agency IMG for similar licensing opportunities in the UK but would not give further details.
He said: “We are delighted to have secured the Italian national football team license. The deal is an example of our innovative marketing and will serve as a showcase of our ability to produce handsets with user-friendly interfaces that have global appeal.”
Onyx currently sells its dual-SIM handset range in selected European markets, through partnerships with networks in Italy, Spain, Moldova and Poland, as well as Argentina. In the UK, handsets are available direct from its website.
