Carphone Warehouse has recruited 500 temporary staff and increased the amount of over time that part timers are afforded to cover the Christmas rush.
Carphone chief executive Andrew Harrison said sales leading up to Christmas this year have been significantly better than last year, but footfall has remained “flat” throughout the year. “We are more scientific in our head count insofar as we are offering part-time staff more hours and offering more flexibility during the seasonal period.
“Although footfall has been flat for most of the year, conversion rate of customers has increased.”
Carphone staff said they hoped the retailer would take on some Christmas staff on a permanent basis to alleviate the shortage of staff since the retailer put in place a recruitment freeze in April this year.
Carphone staff said sales of the LG Cookie on prepay had been strong in recent weeks. LG has shipped more than 10 million Cookie handsets since its launch in November 2008.
