Mobile operators in the UK will receive around £4 million in mobile termination rates (MTRs) during the Christmas period, BT and 3 have claimed.
More than 120,000 consumers and businesses have signed up to 3 and BT’s Terminate the Rate campaign to reduce the amount operators charge to disconnect a call made to another network.
3 and BT claim that MTRs account for as much as 80 per cent of the price per minute of a call from a landline to a mobile.
BT Retail managing director of the consumer division John Petter said: “When family and friends are out and about at Christmas and New Year or that special someone has unwrapped their new mobile, they’ll be expecting a call. Unfortunately they won’t realise just how much the mobile operators are looking forward to that call too.
“Mobile Termination Rates at this time of year are like Santa charging for delivery, and on top of that, they’re not just for Christmas – let’s hope that through Terminate the Rate they’re not for life either.”
