Tesco hits 2m customer mark

Tesco Mobile’s customer base now stands at more than two million following strong handset sales in the run up to and over Christmas and New Year.

The retailer said that the launch of the iPhone in Tesco Phone Shops and online generated strong customer demand. On Christmas Day one customer activated their Tesco Mobile handset every two seconds.

It added that like-for-like accessory sales were up 19 per cent year-on-year as consumers bought mobile and internet stocking fillers. In the seven days before Christmas, Tesco sold 5,000 mobile broadband dongles and 10,000 memory cards.

Tesco also reiterated its intentions to roll out a further 100 Phone Shops this year on top of the 100 it currently has.

It added: “Tesco’s sales of other mobile network brands continued to perform well despite challenging market conditions. A surprise hit for Christmas was the VX1i Party Phone, a credit card sized SIM-free mini mobile which sold thousands of units a week in the run up to Christmas as consumers stocked up for a party accessory.

“Our 100 Tesco Phone Shops have been key to this success, helping customers find the right mobile for their needs and offering consumers choice, convenience and a non-pressured sales environment. Tesco Telecoms will further rollout a further 100 Phone Shops in 2010.”
