VoIP provider Truphone has launched as an MVNO running off the Vodafone network in the UK and in the US through an undisclosed network.
The Truphone Local Anywhere service allows customers to roam with the SIM card while being charged at a local rate for calls, provided Truphone has wholesale network partnerships in the country where the customer is roaming. Customers calling countries where Truphone does not have operator agreements, will receive reduced call rates.
Truphone is expected to launch its service in other European countries as well as Australia, Hong Kong and South Africa later this year.
Truphone claims to save customers up to 40 per cent of their roaming charges through its service.
Calls made from a UK Truphone SIM, while roaming in North America, will be charged at 10p per minute. Calls to the number while roaming will also be charged at local rates.
Customers can also attach an unlimited amount of international mobile phone numbers to the SIM card for £12.99 per year per additional mobile number.
Truphone chief executive Geraldine Wilson said: “Truphone Local Anywhere is a truly revolutionary service for people with an international lifestyle allowing them to ‘stay local’ as they travel around the world. We are delighted to announce this partnership with Vodafone which will give our customers access to a high quality network in the UK.
“Mobile charges are a pain point every time you go abroad, but they needn’t be with Truphone Local Anywhere. We aim to keep you local in top travel destinations around the world, starting with the US and UK, so you can make calls at local rates and your friends, family and colleagues can reach you on a local mobile number.”
Vodafone UK director of business development and wholesale Tim Stone said: “We’re excited to be partnering with Truphone for their Truphone Local Anywhere service. This new relationship demonstrates Vodafone’s commitment to the wholesale market and supports additional growth in our already successful wholesale portfolio.
“By targeting the international travelling community, this partnership opens up new opportunities for Vodafone UK.”
