Vodafone has signed a multi-million-pound contract to deploy smart meters in partnership with British Gas.
The smart meters will provide more accurate household bills and will be fitted in around one million households by the end of 2012. Smart meters are installed with SIM card which read the amount of energy used.
Customers will automatically receive bills, instead of having to wait for the gas board to check the meters manually. The technology works through the network’s data infrastructure.
Vodafone UK enterprise director Peter Kelly (pictured) said: “As the UK’s best network we are always improving services to make our customers’ lives easier.
“We’re pleased to be working with British Gas on this trial to accelerate the roll-out of smart meters into British homes. Consumers can count on our fast, reliable network to help them manage their energy costs with British Gas and do their bit to help reduce carbon emissions.”
Vodafone said its privacy and security measures enables customers to be confident that data sent over the network is done safely.
