3 UK parent company Hutchison Whampoa said its UK and Ireland base increased 15 per cent in 2009, compared with 2008. Its UK and Ireland base stood at 6.261 million at March 29, 2010, Hutchison said.

It also said its ‘active’ customer base was 86 per cent of its total registered users, or 5.384 million.

Hutchison said its UK and Ireland losses, before interest and tax, had reduced by 66 per cent in the year.

Its total revenue from its UK and Ireland businesses was down one per cent in the period to December 31, 2009, compared with a year ago.

Total revenue was £1.548 billion, with its contract base of 3.724 million customers (at March 29, 2010) contributing around 89 per cent of total revenue (£1.380 billion) and its prepay base of 2.537 million contributing 11 per cent (£168.9 million).

Its contract base grew six per cent in 2009 and its prepay base grew 36 per cent. Its UK and Ireland 2009 combined ARPU was £26.46. down 21 per cent, with non-voice ARPU £9.71, or 37 per cent of the average total.

Churn was three per cent per month, or 36 per cent per annum, of its total base, up from 2.6 per cent per month in 2008.
