The Carphone Warehouse has sold 500 HTC Desire handsets in London stores alone in its first week of launch. It said it is one of the fastest-selling handsets in its history.
The HTC Desire launched on March 31 on Vodafone and Orange and is free on a £30 per month two-year contract, or on prepay at £399.95. Carphone chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton said it has purchased large volumes of stock as it expects the device to among its top 10 sellers for six months following.
Stapleton said: “It is going to be one of the best-selling handsets this year. The feedback from the stores has been really strong and we are working very closely with Jon French (HTC head of UK, Ireland and South Africa) to keep our relationship strong. HTC will be a prominent player in the market this year as the form factors of its devices have improved drastically.”
Carphone is expected to secure the Apple iPad for sale in the UK shortly, although Stapleton would not be drawn. Its joint venture partner Best Buy is selling the device in the US.
Stapleton said Carphone is to extend its recent gifting deal, with free Samsung LCD TVs, beyond its initial four-week run.
