O2 staff are edging closer to industrial action after its union members “overwhelmingly” rejected its offer of a two per cent pay increase

O2 staff have edged closer to taking industrial action after “overwhelmingly” rejecting the operator’s final offer of a two per cent pay increase.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU), which represents non-management staff at O2 in both retail and customer service, closed its consultative ballot today (July 6) revealing 90 per cent of its members working for the company have rejected the two per cent offer.

The CWU, has been in negotiations with O2 about an annual pay increase as well as introducing a pay progression structure since early this year. It is now calling for O2 to recommence these negotiations despite the operator stating its offer of two per cent is “final”.

The CWU claims O2 is a company that “can afford” to give its staff an improved pay offer based on its “continued strong” financial results, despite the economic downturn.

CWU assistant secretary Ian Cuthbert said: “All along O2 has argued that it’s “market leading” offer would be accepted. CWU members in O2 have shown that not to be true in the most dramatic fashion.

“From the outset the union’s negotiating team pledged that it would accept the outcome of the ballot whatever the result. We now hope that O2 will listen to the collective voice of employees and enter into meaningful talks for an improved pay settlement.”
