Data Select has secured its third exclusive in as many months after becoming the exclusive distributor for JCB branded handsets and accessories
Handset distributor Data Select has won the tender for exclusive distribution of all future JCB-branded handsets and accessories across the globe.
The deal will see Data Select work with an unnamed handset manufacturer to build the rugged JCB branded devices, which had previously been manufactured by Sonim.
Data Select said it beat off competition from a number of rivals, understood to include Shebang, for the tender and will unveil the new range at its next Platinum Club event later this year.
Data Select will launch three JCB ‘Toughphone’ SIM free devices between October and November. Handset will carry an IP67 durability rating meaning they will be water and dust resistant as well be resistant to knocks and extreme temperatures.
Data Select will target sales through through its existing 600 plus customer and expects the handsets to be available through a number of high street and online retailers targeting both consumer and business sales. It is currently establishing routes to market for international sales.
Handsets will start from £50 for the entry model, £100 for a mid range version and £250 for the “premium” device, which will include a touch screen and dual SIM connectivity.
Other features to be included on selected models will include a camera, GPS, torch and a “walkie talkie” feature which allows users to connect with up to five compatible handsets within a two mile radius. Full details are yet to be released.
It is the third exclusive tie up Data Select has secure with a manufacturer since June having agreed exclusive deals with Huawei to distribute its entire handset and tablet range in the UK, and a Northern Europe and UK distribution deal for the Motorola XT720.
Data Select chief commercial officer Roy Taylor said: “The range will have wide appeal – from parents looking to give kids a robust first phone, through to outdoor types, the white van man and of course the construction trade.
“The market will react positively when we actually announce the range and each phone’s capabilities.”
