Orange launches prepay Android handset for under £100; promises more

Orange has entered the value smartphone market with the launch of the San Francisco, an Android-powered device that will be marketed on prepay for under £100.

The San Francisco, from Chinese manufacturer ZTE, runs Android 2.1 giving users access to applications through the Android Market such as Orange Wednesday and Orange Maps.

The device also features a three-megapixel camera, MP3 player, FM radio, Wi-Fi and bluetooth.

Orange said the San Francisco handset is the first in a series of new affordable Android devices to be ranged from Orange in the UK. It will go on sale for £99 on prepay.

Three has already launched a sub-£100 Android phone, the Racer, also developed in collaboration with ZTE. This is co-branded by both ZTE and Three.

Orange director of devices Phil Roberson said: “The San Francisco is the first in a series of affordable Android devices we have planned for Orange.”
