Handset distributor 20:20 Mobile expects the UK mobile phone recycling sector to consolidate in the next 12 months

20:20 Mobile soft launched its own consumer recycling business, Phone Recycle Bank, in December last year, joining a suddenly busy market place, and paid out more than £1 million for handsets within the first six months.

It claims there are 30 million handsets up for recycling each year with the UK replacement market.

Phone Recycle Bank has been extended to the dealer channel as a white-label service for high-end devices only.

20:20 sales director Jon Miller said 20:20 Mobile is in a stronger position than others because of its infrastructure and global relationships. Refurbished devices are re-sold back in to UK markets including through its premier portal, or shipped overseas.

It said only a few dealers are so far trialling its white-label recycling as it tweaks the offer for full launch.

Miller commented: “Recycling is a huge business in the UK  and it’s a growth industry. There are a huge number of  players in the market and it will consolidate and mature over the next 12-18 months. Certainly some of the price points being offered are unsustainable.

“We have our own website and white-label service. But our model is very structured; we know the kind of handset models we want, and the types of businesses we want to work with. We won’t just buy in every secondhand phone out there.”
