Carphone and Best Buy get Google Nexus S exclusive

Joint venture partners Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy get exclusive rights on Samsung-made ‘Nexus S’ Google phone, the first device to run Android 2.3, through the Christmas period

The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy UK will exclusively stock Google’s new smartphone, the Nexus S, in the UK later this month. It is manufactured by Samsung.

The exclusivity on the handset will last until Christmas, the firms said, and will be available for free on a £35 per month contracts, or SIM-free for £549.95.

The Nexus S is the first phone to run Android 2.3, also called ‘Gingerbread’, and features Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which in principle allows the phone to read and transmit information from and to other NFC-ready objects. Examples of include movie posters or stickers embedded with NFC tags.

Google said the phone is the world’s first to have a curved screen, designed to fit comfortably in the palm. It has a premium super AMOLED screen, which reflects less glare under direct sunlight compared to traditional LCD screens.

The phone has 16GB of internal memory, a 1Ghz ‘Hummingbird’ processor, combined Flash and HTML5 technology and back and front facing cameras.

Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy UK chief operating officer Andrew Harrison said: “Nexus S from Google represents a giant leap forward for smartphones.

“It’s the most sophisticated Android phone to date and will make a big impression with its speed, advanced features and beautiful curved design.”

Google vice president engineering Andy Rubin said: “This device combines hardware innovation by one of our partners, Samsung, with innovations to the Android platform, to raise the bar on what’s possible when it comes to creating a powerful mobile user experience.
