O2 has partnered with Facebook to become one of the first companies to offer the ‘Facebook Deals’ service in the UK.

The service which is available from today (January 31) allows users to claim discounts and special offers when they check into a retailers shop on their smartphone.

O2 will give any customer who checks into any one of their stores a 10 per cent discount on any accessory or gaming product they wish to purchase.

The service is free for O2 customers to use and the operator has not paid Facebook anything for the service.

There are currently three million iPhone users on the O2 network and most of them use the social network regularly according to O2 head of social media Alex Pearmain.

“We believe we’re better, connected, and Facebook is a great way for O2 to get even closer to our customers,” Pearmain said.

Pearmain said the Facebook offer would be ongoing for the “foreseeable future”.

In addition to the offer of a discount O2 will, this Saturday, give the first customers to check in at selected stores when upgrading or purchasing a pay monthly contract a free Xbox 360 or Playstation 3.

  1. Quite similar to the Mobistar network in Belgium; there, you can link your bank account to your SIM, allowing you to pay for products using your mobile phone.

However, in Belgium you're not expected to lodge any money with the phone network. And it's without fees; the only prerequisite is that you stay with Mobistar / Orange.
