Durable touchscreen device added to the manufacturer’s Galaxy handset portfolio, launching in the UK later this year

Samsung is to release the waterproof Galaxy Xcover in the UK before the end of the year.

The Xcover, which runs off Android 2,3 and is powered by a 800MHz processor, is waterproof to a depth of one metre for a maximum time of 30 minutes and engineered from materials Samsung said are designed to protect it from wear and tear. The handset is also dust proof.

The 3.65-inch touchscreen is scratch resistent and made from tempered glass which Samsung added is four to five times tougher than normal glass.

The Galaxy Xcover comes with Samsung’s ‘Social Hub’, bringing together communication history, instant messenger status and updates from social networking sites together in one place. The phone also includes a three-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash that can be converted to operate as a torch.

Samsung Mobile UK and Ireland managing director Simon Stanford said: “We’ve designed the Samsung Galaxy Xcover especially for those consumers who need all the functionalities of a smartphone that can stand up to demanding lifestyles. By combining the best of our social features together with a strong, airtight chassis makes this smartphone resistant to dust and water damage without compromising on the design.”
