Retailer halves the price of its entry level tariff as it begins to phase out sales of fixed line phones due to smartphone surge

Asda Mobile is trialing a deal for prepay customers this month that sees customers who top-up their SIM cards by £5 receive 100 minutes and 100 texts.

The trial halves the price of Asda Mobile’s entry level tariff and represents a saving of £11 off the Asda standard tariff for 100 minutes and 100 texts.

The offer comes as Asda Mobile begins phasing out sales of landline phones at its stores after claiming there has been a surge in the take-up of smartphones and “plummeting” sales of fixed line handsets.

A newly released National Omnibus poll revealed that 37 per cent of respondents don’t use their home phone for calls and 19 per cent of 18-34 year olds claim not to have a landline phone at home.

Asda Mobile buyer James McMurrough said: “This offer redefines value for mobile phone customers and shows that traditional landline usage may soon be a thing of the past.

“Standing in one place to make a call just doesn’t make sense anymore, nor does untangling the wire, so we’ve decided to hang up on sales of landline phones.

“The truth is that mobiles are more powerful, more affordable and more convenient and there just isn’t a compelling reason to have a landline phone anymore.”
