O2 appoints Heineken man as new head of sponsorship

Current Heineken Group brand director for Fosters and John Smith’s Mark Given will take up role at O2 on January 16

O2 has appointed Heineken Group brand director Mark Given as its head of sponsorship, replacing Simon Freedman who left in March.

Given will join the operator on January 16th and will head up sponsorships within O2’s brand team.

While at Heineken, Given (pictured) was responsible for both the Fosters and John Smith’s brands which account for retail sales of £2.6 billion and 50 per cent of UK company and volume.

Over the last four years, he has been responsible for hiring advertising agency Adam and Eve to develop the Foster’s “Good Call” campaign, secure Foster’s sponsorship of online comedy show The Return of Alan Partridge and TV comedy The Fast Show.

He also resurrected the Peter Kay advertising campaign for John Smith’s and negotiated an extension to the brands sponsorship of the John Smith’s Grand National.

Speaking about Given’ appointment O2 head of brand Shadi Halliwell said: “Our sponsorship portfolio delivers deeper and more engaging experiences for our customers. Bringing Mark into the team with his wealth of brand experience will allow us to further develop and evolve the offering for our customers. I am thrilled he is joining us.”
