Third iPad to be powered by a quad-core processor with a screen that is four times the quality of the iPad 2 and produces one million more pixels than on a HD TV
Apple unveiled the iPad 3 at its conference last night, and revealed it will go on sale in the UK as early as next Friday, March 16.
The third iPad is powered by Apple’s A5X quad-core processor and runs off iOS 5.1, the latest update to the manufacturer’s mobile operating system.
It comes with a touchscreen that produces four times the number of pixels of the iPad 2, with the 3.1 million pixels in the display over one million more pixels than on a HD TV.
The improved screen means video can also now be recorded and played in HD.
A five-megapixel camera includes a new video image stabilisation feature. Users can also edit and share content using the preloaded Photos app.
iCloud is featured, a set of free cloud services including iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream and Documents in the Cloud that works with the iPad and iPhone to automatically and wirelessly store content and transfer it to devices.
The new iPad also supports voice-to-text dictation. Users can tap on the microphone icon on the keyboard, speak into it and when finished, tap on the ‘done’ option and the device converts the words into text.
Dictation can be used to write messages, take notes and search the web. It also works with third-party apps, so users can update their Facebook status or tweet.
The new iPad runs almost all of the 585,000 plus apps available on the Apple App Store, including more than 200,000 apps designed for the iPad.
The iPad Wi-Fi will be avaialble in black and white for £399 for the 16GB model, £479 for the 32GB model and £559 for the 64GB model.
The iPad Wi-Fi + 4G will cost £499 for the 16GB model, £579 for the 32GB model and £659 for the 64GB model. All prices include VAT.
The device will be sold in the UK through Apple’s online store, Apple’s retail stores and selected Apple authorised resellers.
It will also be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland and the US Virgin Islands from March 16.
