Boost to NFC payments, O2 Wallet and offers for merchants all expected from the deal
Telefonica Digital and Visa have announced a strategic partnership to help drive the use of mobile commerce services including NFC and the O2 Wallet.
The deal is part of a strategy by Telefonica, parent company of O2, to increase its presence in mobile commerce and will see the two companies promote offers for merchants and mobile point of sale terminals.
Telefonica Digital director of financial services Joaquin Mata said: “This market has enormous untapped potential and through this partnership with Visa Europe we aim to unlock significant new business opportunities.”
Visa Europe executive vice president of product and marketing solutions Mariano Dima added: “We are delighted to have been appointed as Telefonica’s preferred mobile payments partner in Europe. We’ve worked together for many years to deliver mobile payments and service showcases across some of the most innovative countries in Europe. This partnership will deliver mainstream, commercial mobile payments on an international level.”
Meanwhile, O2’s M2M division has extended its partnership deal with G4S utility services to provide 1.4 million SIMs for smart meters across the UK.
The multi-million pound deal will see O2 supplying the company for the next five years.
O2’s head of M2M Gilli Coston said: “The energy sector is a key area of focus for our M2M team and I am delighted that we have been able to extend our partnership with G4S Utility Services. This agreement truly takes the M2M market and in particular our offering to another level”.
