Huawei launches low-priced smartphone through Tesco Mobile

Chinese manufacturer targets first time smartphone owners with Ascend Y 201 handset with Tesco

Tesco Mobile has signed an exclusive deal with Chinese manufacturer Huawei to stock the low end ‘Ascend Y 201’ handset.

The Android powered handset, available from today (September 25), is being targeted at first time smartphone owners and costs £70 on prepay or £10 per month on Tesco Mobile contracts.

Features on the phone include a 3.5-inch touchscreen, with 320 x 480-pixel resolution, a 3.2 megapixel camera and 4GB of memory which can be expanded to 32GB using a MicroSD card.

The device will use Huawei’s HAP 5.1 interface running off Android’s 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, which offers access to 450,000 applications via Google Play. A download speed of 7.2Mbps is expected and the battery providers for up to five hours of talk time.

The launch will be seen as an attempt by the Chinese company to capture a share of the lower end of the smartphone market, having launched the sub £100 Android powered Blaze handsets last year.
