Mystery Caller: tablet with data plan

Mystery Caller has a new job and will have to use trains to travel. A tablet would be ideal to keep him entertained, so he wants one with a data plan. Can the networks offer anything other than an Apple iPad?

6: Virgin

Without me being able to get a word in, he said: “We can do a credit check now.” He hadn’t even sold me anything

Andy claimed O2 didn’t sell data plans for tablets, yet there is a whole page dedicated to various Apple iPad data plans on the firm’s website

I had no idea what ‘quiet time’ was. Stefan said he thought it was between 5pm and midnight, but he didn’t sound too sure

There was now silence from Jason, and it was up to me to ask about the other iPad models and their data allowances

I explained I was shopping around for now, which Mohammed was perfectly comfortable with – it was refreshing not to be dealing with a pushy salesperson

Christina read my mind because, without being prompted, she said the tariffs were the same on the iPad 2 but that the up-front cost varied

Summary

This was a simple query about product and price plans with no set budget, but the performance of half of the operators was decidedly average.

One general disappointment was that the networks only sell Apple iPads, with no alternatives from other manufacturers. It shows the tablet market hasn’t taken o at all yet through the mass retail channel.

Virgin’s Jake was useless and never grasped my query, while O2’s Andy claimed the network didn’t even o er data plans for the iPad. This was wrong. Stefan at T-Mobile performed well but his explanations weren’t very clear.

It was between the other three networks to vie for top prize. Jason’s hesitancy saw him marked down and Christina at Orange only just edged out Three’s Mohammed because of her bubbly attitude and quick, detailed responses.
