Figure up 10 per cent from last year and 27 per cent from normal levels last year
O2 has revealed that more than 440 million text messages were sent across its network on New Year’s Eve.
The figure is a 10 per cent increase from the number sent during the same period last year, which had seen the first SMS drop. It was also up 27 per cent from typical levels in 2012.
The operator claimed that SMS is still proving popular, despite the rising popularity of alternative means of messaging.
O2 general manager for consumer Gary Booker said: “These stats show that amongst the growth of social networking and instant messaging, many people still like to send a text on New Year’s Eve.”
