Heading out to Barcleona for Mobile World Congress? If yes, here’s a few bits of information you need to know before heading out.
The most important thing to know is the Mobile World Congress 2013 has moved away from the Fira Montjuic which had hosted the event since 2006.
It has instead switched to to the new 240,000 sq ft Fira Gran Via conference venue – 3.9km away. See map below. It can be found on Google Maps as ‘Fira Barcelona, Hospitalet de Llobregat’.
The nearest station to the venue is Europa-Fira, with frequent trains and buses into the city centre.
The following FGC lines service this station:
S8 Plaça Espanya / Martorell-Enllaç
S4 Plaça Espanya / Olesa
R5 Plaça Espanya / Manresa
S33 Plaça Espanya / Can Ros
R6 Plaça Espanya / Igualada
Fira Gran Via has more than 4,500 underground parking spaces. Parking is available at a cost of €2.90 per hour. Hourly tickets can be purchased from machines in the car park.
The new venue has 94,000-square metres of exhibition space – around a third bigger than in previous years.
Other improvements to the show include more on-site food outlets and a 233 per cent improvement in Wi-Fi capacity, thanks to more hotspots and improved positioning.
The conference facility for keynotes is now 21 per cent larger as the GSMA looks to avoid the overcrowding of recent years. Up to 2,000 people will be able to attend each keynote lecture at this year’s event.
The new venue will provide better connections for visitors with a larger taxi rank than the old venue, better disabled access, a moving walkway between the exhibition halls and the introduction of a new shuttle bus service to transport attendees to and from the airport.
The Mobile World Congress runs from February 25-28 at the Fira Gran Via conference centre in Barcelona, which lies between the city centre and Barcelona airport and is four kilometres from the previous venue.
Fira Gran Via is comprised of eight exhibition halls under a single roof (see graphic below). The layout begins with Hall 1, located at the South Entrance, and continues to Hall 8 and the North Entrance. In the heart of Fira Gran Via lies Congress Square (shown in black on the map below), which is sure to be a great meeting and gathering point.
Halls 1 through 7 are single-level spaces. But thanks to a dual-level walkway connecting the halls, complete with moving sidewalks, escalators and elevators, there’s plenty of space for our 70,000 attendees to move along quickly. Another plus is that Fira Gran Via is very friendly for those attendees with mobility issues.
The only multi-level hall is Hall 8, which will host App Planet, mPowered Brands, our Ministerial Programme, Exhibition space (Hall 8.1), and theatre events such as our Forum Series, App Developer Conferences (ADCs), mPowered Brands Theatres and Partner Events (Hall 8.0).
Halls 1, 2 and 3 contain Hospitality Suite and Meeting Room space. Halls 3, 5, 6, 7, 8.1, and Congress Square will contain Exhibition stands. Hall 4 is our Conference Village. As the Hall 4 Conference Village is dedicated exclusively to the Conference Programme, access to this hall is restricted to Silver, Gold and Platinum Pass Holders
