O2 has launched a train booking app to let consumers buy tickets to any mainline UK route from all rail operators free of booking and credit card fees.

‘O2 Train Travel’, which is free to download on iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices, enables consumers to have their train ticket sent directly to their mobile, as well as make seat reservations and compare prices. The operator said customers can save up to 80 per cent on advanced fares compared to buying on the day.

The app is also seamlessly integrated with O2 Wallet, enabling customers to pay for tickets securely using the cards they hold within the service. There is also an option to pay manually using a debit or credit card.

The operator said research it commissioned research of 2,000 people last November that showed strong support for the benefits that O2 Train Travel offers.

Less than half (46 per cent) fo UK train travellers buy their tickets at a station and for planned journeys, four out of five buy their tickets in advance. Nearly two thirds (62 per cent) users of train booking services avoid those that charge a booking fee.

O2 Money managing director James Le Brocq (p[ictured) said: “We have long said that our future lies in becoming a trusted provider of brilliant digital services. Earlier last year we launched O2 Wallet which delivers the benefits of mobile money to thousands of our customers. Enabling those same customers to also purchase rail tickets quickly and securely – either using the wallet or via a stand-alone app – is a natural extension of this approach.

“Consumers no longer just use their phones for making calls.  They see their mobile device as a digital equivalent of the swiss army knife, enabling them to do a host of activities on the go.  O2 Train Travel allows people to plan journeys, check train times and buy rail tickets, all on the move and pay for it securely and easily using O2 Wallet as a secure mobile wallet platform.”
