Former HTC execs set up smartphone maker Kazam (Updated)

James Atkins and Michael Coombes, who left HTC in March, intend to launch a range of smartphones later this year

Two former HTC executives have today (June 18) announced they plan to launch a new smartphone ‘Kazam’ brand.

James Atkins and Michael Coombes, who were head of marketing and head of sales respectively at HTC before they left in March, have set up a new smartphone brand, Kazam.

Kazam Mobile was formed in January this year  and has its registered office registered in London’s prestigious Berkeley Square. This appears to be purely a registered office address available to anyone for a nominal fee of £99 a year. According to Companies House Kazam was previously called SCOTREX Technologies.  Daniel Readman, a director of ruggedised phone manufacturer Toughshield, is also a director of Kazam according to Companies House records.

In the official announcement Coombes said: “We believe your smartphone is a digital reflection of who you are, and since we are all different, it’s important that we don’t adopt a one size fits all approach.Kazam’s dynamic structure and focus on local markets means we can react quickly to the ever evolving and diverging needs of today’s consumer. We aim to provide quality smartphones that are accessible to everyone.”

Atkins added: “There is a real opportunity for a new mobile brand to disrupt the status quo. We are passionate about delivering a truly positive mobile experience that doesn’t just stop once you’ve bought the phone. Kazam is about stunning design, robust hardware and intuitive technology, underpinned by outstanding customer service.”

Atkins and Coombes have however declined to be interviewed about their launch plans or how the brand will compete with established giants.
