The reductions will happen in waves until the end of the year and affect all departments, say sources cited by the Wall Street Journal
BlackBerry is planning to reduce staff numbers by 40 per cent before the end of the year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The report follows BlackBerry’s decision to make “significant cuts” among its sales team earlier this month, while 5,000 jobs were lost last year.
Citing people close to the company, the newspaper said some BlackBerry employees have been informed of the scale and timing of the cuts, which are yet to be confirmed by the manufacturer.
The layoffs will affect all departments and will happen in stages, the report said.
A BlackBerry spokesperson said: “Organisational moves will continue to occur to ensure we have the right people in the right roles to drive new opportunities in mobile computing.”
