Handset manufacturer and NFC specialist create ‘Appvent Calendar’ to help drive awareness of Windows Phone applications this christmas
Nokia has teamed up with with near field communication (NFC) specialists ‘Wooshping’ to create a NFC advent calendar to show off a range of Windows Phone applications.
The ‘Appvent Calendar’ will be displayed in more than 1,500 locations in the UK, including O2, EE, Three, Vodafone, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U stores.
Customers with NFC compatible Windows devices, such as Nokia Lumia 1020, can tap their device on the calendar which will then automatically take them to an app in the Widows Market Place.
Farnham based Wooshping, founded in 2012, has worked with Nokia on a number of campaigns – such as building 22,000 NFC wristbands for staff, will control the service, updating available apps – which will be free to download – every day up to Christmas.
Wooshping founder and managing director Rupert Englander said: “One of the main challenges that Windows Phone has is getting across the message that it has a great range of apps, so we felt that we could create the calendar to help get that message across, because every day you will see a new app.”
Wooshping, based in Farnham, was launched in 2012 by former Nokia head of innovations and services Englander after he secured secured funding from Nokia through its employee business development programme.
The company has since worked with Nokia on several campaigns, most notably in November when it provided 22,000 NFC-enabled wristbands to UK retail staff at Nokia stockists to demonstrate the technology. Staff were able to use the wristbands to offer Nokia Lumia users exclusive playlists through Nokia Music.

In addition to Nokia, it has also worked with Sony to create NFC tags to be used at its various customer showcase events, allowing attendees to enter competitions by tapping NFC enabled stands.
