Apple App Store sales top record $10bn in 2013

Technology giant also reveals it experienced a record December with over $1 billion in sales and three billion apps downloaded in the month

The Apple App Store generated more than $10 billion in sales last year – a record for the company. It also experienced a record for month in December.

Sales in December alone topped $1 billion, with customers downloading three billion apps. Apple’s developers have now earned $15 billion on the App Store since its launch in July 2008.

Apple said it wasn’t able to offer comparisons for 2012 and its previous record December as it didn’t release figures for these periods.

The App Store offers more than one million apps in 24 categories for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch in 155 countries, with more than 500,000 native iPad apps available.

In June, Apple unveiled an upgraded version of its operating system, iOS 7, which offered more than 200 new features and APIs. |It was aimed at creating a flatter, and cleaner look for the OS.

The OS featured on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, which were released in September, and iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display, which were released in November.
