Sony adds Z1 Compact to Xperia smartphone range

Smaller version of flagship Z1 to go on sale next month, with Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U so far confirming availability in the UK

Sony Mobile has unveiled the Xperia Z1 Compact at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The smartphone, which will be available in black, white, green and pink, will be available before the end of this month. Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U have so far confirmed they will be selling the device in the UK.

Phones 4U has opened pre-orders for it online. The cheapest tariff is on Vodafone, which offers it free with 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data, as well as a Sony wireless speaker worth £119. The retailer is promising a delivery date of January 31 for pre-orders. Customers can also register their interest in the device on Carphone Warehouse’s website.

The Xperia Z1 Compact, which joins the Z, Z1 and Z1 Ultra in the range, is powered by a quad-core 2.2GHz processor and runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It is also dust proof and can be kept under up to 1.5 metres of water for 30 minutes.

It has a 4.3-inch HD touchscreen and includes Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, which the manufacturer said enhances screen contrast and sharpness. The screen also includes Sony’s X-Reality for mobile, which finds and reproduces any lacking pixels.

It has a 20.7 megapixel camera with Sony’s Exmor RS for mobile imaging sensor and BIONZ for mobile imaging processor, which Sony said ensures it has fast auto-focus and highly stable images for video shooting.

Also included is a two megapixel front camera, HD video recording, up to 16GB of internal memory that can be extended by 64GB with a microSD card and Sony’s Battery STAMINA Mode, which automatically turns off functions to save power when they’re not needed and restarts them when they are needed.
