Chief executive criticises operator after promotion targets Blackberry users

BlackBerry chief executive John Chen has slammed T-Mobile US after the network encouraged BB users to switch to the iPhone 5s. 

The promotional e-mail trailed a “great offer for BlackBerry customers offering an iPhone at $25 a month spread over two years with no downpayment. It also said BlackBerry customers could benefit from the “powerful communications and productivity” that Apple was known for.

Writing on the BlackBerry blog Chen thanked customers who had contacted T-Mobile to complain about the message (the actual number who did this is unclear), and said “T-Mobile could not have got it more wrong”. He also says that there was an offer for customers on the network in the pipeline.

T Mobile US announced in September it would no longer stock Blackberry in its North American stores due to lack of sales.

Perhaps mindful that operator support is crucial to any future the firm may have, Chen adopted a more conciliatory tone to sign the blog off, adding: “I hope we can find a way forward that allows us to serve our shared customers once again.”
