BlackBerry appoint Marty Beard as new COO

Manufacturer brings in ex Sybase head to lead marketing, BB10 development and customer care and quality

BlackBerry has appointed former Sybase president Marty Beard as its new chief operating officer (COO). He replaces Kristian Tear, who left the company in November as part of a management shake-up.

Beard served under current Blackberry CEO John Chen until he left the mobile solutions company in 2011 to join cloud applications company LiveOps. He spent three years as vice president of Oracle Online.

He will be in charge of marketing, BlackBerry 10 app development and customer care and quality, the Canadian manufacturer said.

His appointment comes a week after Blackberry shares dropped more than 10 per cent following the announcement of a development partnership between Apple and IBM last week.

Chen claims the appointment shows BlackBerry still has enough credibility to attract high profile executives.

“BlackBerry continues to attract top talent to the company,” he said. “Marty brings extensive experience in operations, marketing and serving customers through the best technologies and processes available.”
