O2 handed ‘high assurance’ rating by ICO over data handling

Operator receives praise in an audit from the Information Commissioner’s Office on the steps it takes to safeguard customer data, which identified limited scope for improvement 

O2 has been awarded the GREEN ‘high assurance’ rating by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) – the first UK mobile operator to receive this accreditation.

The audit by the ICO last month focused on the steps taken to safeguard customer data. It found there were ‘effective procedures for performing background checks for staff’ and that O2 has ‘good controls in place for that access to personal data is restricted to job roles’.

It added there were ‘strong physical measures in place’ at the sites the ICO visited and that there were ‘comprehensive procedures for recording, investigating and escalating any breaches of security’.

The ICO’s report said the audit identified just limited scope for improvement in existing arrangements and that significant action to reduce the risk of non-compliance is not necessary.

An O2 spokesperson said: “We take the handling of our customers’ data extremely seriously and continually review our procedures to ensure we act in their best interests at all times.

“We believe that for customers to benefit from better, cheaper and more innovative services, businesses must first work hard to establish a higher level of trust and clearly demonstrate the value presented.”
